US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak after the closure started.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.
