The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
An recent term emerged a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials disputes these allegations, just as it denies everything it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course banned Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on peace has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
